Why Your RO Membrane Keeps Fouling Even After Cleaning
Many water treatment operators face a frustrating problem:
The membrane is cleaned.
Performance improves.
Then a few days or weeks later...
👉 fouling comes back again.
Why?
Most people focus on cleaning.
Very few focus on the root cause.
Cleaning Removes the Symptom, Not the Cause
Cleaning can remove:
scale
organic deposits
biological growth
But if the source of contamination remains,
the fouling will quickly return.
This is why many systems enter a cycle of:
Clean → Recover → Fouling → Clean Again
Root Cause #1: Poor Pretreatment
This is the most common reason.
If suspended solids continue entering the RO system,
the membrane will foul repeatedly.

overloaded multimedia filters
ineffective cartridge filters
insufficient UF pretreatment

This accelerates fouling.

"How do we clean the membrane?"
They ask:

This simple change in thinking often reduces:

✔ membrane replacement cost
