Why RO System Pressure Keeps Increasing
Why RO System Pressure Keeps Increasing
In many RO water treatment systems, operators notice one common problem:
👉 operating pressure keeps increasing.
At first, the system may still produce water.
But if the pressure continues to rise, it usually means the RO system is under stress.
This can lead to:
higher energy consumption
lower water production
membrane fouling
shorter membrane life
higher maintenance cost
1. Membrane Fouling
When particles, organics, or biological matter build up on the membrane surface, water becomes harder to pass through.
As a result:
👉 the pump needs higher pressure to maintain production.
This is one of the most common reasons for pressure increase.
2. Scaling on the Membrane Surface
Minerals such as calcium, magnesium, silica, and sulfate can form scale.
Scale blocks membrane pores and reduces water flow.
Common signs include:
increasing pressure
lower permeate flow
higher cleaning frequency
3. Poor Pretreatment
If pretreatment is not working properly, contaminants enter the RO system directly.
Common problems include:
clogged filters
overloaded media filters
poor UF performance
unstable feed water quality
Good pretreatment protects the RO membrane and helps keep pressure stable.
4. Cartridge Filter Blockage
Sometimes the issue is not the RO membrane itself.
A blocked cartridge filter before the RO system can also cause pressure problems.
This is why pressure should be checked at different points of the system, not only at the RO inlet.
5. Incorrect Operating Conditions
High recovery rate, unstable flow, or wrong chemical dosing can increase concentration inside the system.
This makes fouling and scaling happen faster.
What Should U Do First?
Before replacing the membrane, check:
✔ feed water quality
✔ pretreatment performance
✔ cartridge filter condition
✔ pressure difference
✔ cleaning history
Many pressure problems can be solved earlier if the real cause is found.
Final Suggestion
Increasing RO pressure is not just a pressure problem.
It is usually a warning signal.
👉 The system may be fouling, scaling, or running under poor pretreatment conditions.
Finding the root cause early can reduce energy cost, protect membranes, and avoid unexpected downtime.
