ABB B&R Launches New Intelligent Wall Thickness Controller for Sustainable Plastics Processing
On April 13, 2026, ABB Machine Automation (B&R) officially released a new generation of intelligent wall thickness controller at Chinaplas 2026, providing a precise and efficient solution for the green transformation of the plastics industry.
Against the backdrop of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan that promotes plastic reduction and recycling, manufacturing is shifting from volume-oriented to quality-driven development. Precise material usage has become a key trend, and wall thickness control in plastic blow molding is critical for saving materials, improving product performance and cutting costs.
B&R’s intelligent wall thickness controller is an intelligent process control system for blow molding based on programmable curves and high-precision actuators. It converts preset wall thickness profiles into control signals, and drives servo valves or servo motors to dynamically adjust die opening in a closed-loop manner, achieving accurate control of parison thickness distribution.
The system consists of B&R’s high-definition industrial capacitive touch screen, high-performance PLC and high-speed analog I/O modules. It integrates dedicated wall thickness control algorithms and a visual interface, designed specifically for accumulator and continuous extrusion blow molding machines.
Its built-in intelligent algorithm effectively suppresses oscillations of servo valves and proportional servo valves, ensuring smooth parison profiles. This helps manufacturers reduce plastic consumption and production costs further. With a pre-encapsulated process library and user-friendly interface, operators can quickly set wall thickness curves and load configuration parameters for ready-to-use operation.
As a business unit of ABB Group, B&R is a global leader in industrial automation headquartered in Austria. It provides complete solutions for machine and factory automation, motion control, HMI and integrated safety technology. With industrial IoT communication standards such as OPC UA, POWERLINK and openSAFETY, as well as Automation Studio software, B&R continues to drive the future of automation engineering.
By launching this new intelligent wall thickness controller, B&R empowers plastics processors to achieve higher precision, better sustainability and greater operational efficiency, supporting the industry’s long-term green and high-quality development.
